Careers in the meetings, events, expositions, trade shows, conventions, and related areas continues to grow decade over decade. The range of opportunities is quite vast. One may work directly for a venue that hosts meetings such as a convention center, resort hotel, conference center, or cruise line. In other areas, one may become an independent meeting planner. Some planners specialize in corporate meetings or government meetings…others in social planning such as weddings and special occasions. Still others help design large conventions, trade show booths, and do the set up for major convention center facilities. There are even areas of audio visual, entertainment, catering and food & beverage sales, lighting and design, and so on and so forth. The meetings industry is one of the most vibrant portions of the overall hospitality and tourism industry. The hospitality and tourism industry is the world’s largest service industry. Career options range from marketing to management to information technology to guest service. Add in accounting, law, finance, human resources, food and beverage, architecture, and other areas and you have a true “world” of opportunity. This vast industry spans auto rental agencies, rail travel, airlines, cruise lines, theme parks and attractions, meeting & event planning companies, stadiums, arenas, convention centers, hotels & resorts, casinos, national and state parks, adventure tourism, travel agencies, and beyond. It’s a true global field which employs every career discipline.
